The UC Vision
Unified communications products deliver rich, intuitive and seamless communication capabilities that enhance productivity and collaboration by streamlining how people communicate. Unified communications is a keystone to communications and network convergence.
 
Today, telephone, e-mail, fax, and voice mail are the cornerstones of business communications. And each has its own infrastructure... phone, fax and voicemail are generally connected to a proprietary telephone system (PBX) inside the organization and may include custom hardware and storage, while e-mail is generally IP-based, allowing messages to flow between corporate offices and over the Internet.
 
Add to these cornerstones more recent technologies like instant messaging, web conferencing, contact directories, and IP-based telephone (i.e. phones calls from a PC with a service like Skype™), and we see that businesses today have many options for communication. In fact, according to a recent report from Sage Research, organizations have deployed an average of 6.4 types of communications devices and 4.8 communications software applications.
 
Unfortunately though, most of these systems are not integrated.  Users must adapt to different devices and interfaces and even use unique identities – for example a phone number vs. and e-mail address vs. a fax number – just to communicate and conduct business.  For example, an employee having to walk to the fax machine to pick up faxes, then check voice mail from their desk from, then check voice mail from their cell phone, and then e-mail from their computer.  These areas where we are striving to improve your company’s ability to communicate internally, with vendors, and customers.
 
Finally, acquiring, deploying and maintaining these multiple communication infrastructures are expensive.  The management and provisioning systems are separate for each set of communications medium and add additional costs for hardware, software, and specialized skills required to manage each platform.  The bottom line is that organization agility and mobility is constrained by the reduction in employee productivity and especially extra costs incurred by the current communications infrastructure in business today.
